Tasks
My assigned theme is the conspiracies behind fairytales and folktales. Our overarching concept challenges stereotypes and common perceptions of good and evil. Instead of viewing certain figures or ideas as inherently bad, we’re exploring the possibility that they were simply misunderstood. After researching, I selected three stories that best convey our theme: Hansel and Gretel, the legend of Baba Yaga, and the classic fairytale Little Red Riding Hood. Each of these tales presents characters or elements traditionally seen as evil, but when reexamined, they may simply be misunderstood.
The information of that I collected is being recorded in the shared google docs attached below.
After everyone completed their part of the research, we gather the information in the first Canva slide so we could propose our ideas to sir on week 2. I designed the canva slide to try to make it match our dark theme and allocate a slide for everyone to put in their informaton.
Major Project 1 by Adriena TanAfter presenting multiple ideas for our project, Mr. Kamal shared that he liked the Hungry Ghost Festival concept the most. He felt that, despite being deeply rooted in Malaysian culture for generations, it was a festival he had never truly understood. He appreciated our approach in challenging the stereotypical perceptions surrounding it while also using the project as a way to educate others about its significance. With that approval, we moved on to making a dedicated slide. We delegated and agreed on different roles to approach the following task, I have been assigned to take care of the slide designs and put in all the basic necessary details first like logline, synopsis, story theme and story arc.
We presented the final proposal to Mr. Kamal once again and received his approval. However, he provided some feedback for minor adjustments before we submit it to him for a final review. We also did some minor changes to the character design that Chaoran sketch like matching the ghost closer to the Xu Chen (the spirit) instead. We tried to search for more reference from other films and illustration to help find our art direction as well, all of these progress are recorded in the Miro board we shared.
Feedback
The Baba Yaga story will be adapted to a more local context by incorporating a Malaysian-style house. The snake element feels too straightforward, so we will expand on it further.
Additionally, we will ensure the overall tone remains positive, portraying the ghost in a less frightening and more educational manner. The final piece will be around 2-3 minutes long.
Week 3:
Problem Statement: Add in what is currently happening, what we think about this in Malaysia
Unique Selling Point: Product Positioning - Put in some similar animations / graphics novel as references
Act 1: Show that the spirit is not human (eg. the spirit can't pick up things)
Theme: Add the big theme (Perception vs Reality) and explain (human connection / remembrance), if have any sub-theme, can add in
Characters:
- Liang and Yun a bit too young, 10 y/o will be enough - young boy can see the spirit
- Transition of the Spirit between ghost form and spirit form should connect - can't see the connection for now
- Coco suits our story
- Luka father can be the reference of the spirit
- Pendant - if it's important, set up in Act 1
