Lectures

Week 10

This week, Mr. Kamal wanted us to experiment with modeling simple character to have an insight into what out assignment 3 will be like. He had picked a character which he deemed is the easiest to practice modeling characters. We were requested to download the reference picture from times and improt it into blender, the front and the side view.

This is our progress so far for this week, I ran into a trouble on trying to mirror the other of of patrick. Apparently sir said that sometimes our origin/ model may not be perfectly centered which will cause the mirroring issue. I can simply just press shift + S, pick cursor to selected and it would be fine.

PROJECT 2 : THEMED SCENE-BASED MODELING

1. You are required to model a scene based environment on the provided themed concept using various techniques you have learned. The final output will be in a diorama or isometric composition.
Search reference images or blueprints.

2. Model the selected object using polygon tools and techniques based on what you have learnt.

3. Apply the right material and texture to give its appearance.

4. Set lighting and rendering using ‘Eevee’ or ‘Cycle’ as the rendering engine.

5. Use Eevee or Cycle rendering (Blender ) for final output. Output size is 1280 x 720 with png format.

6. Upload in your e-portfolio and update the link on TIMES platform as submission.

7. Submission is on Week 11 (2 Weeks)

Project 2 - Theme Scene-based Modeling

Looking for ideas and example

I was considering between ancient Japanese tatami room, or just a modern room. I looked for a few reference on Pinterest to evaluate what my capabilities are to model, and here are a few that I think are within my capabilities. I contemplating between whether i should relate my themed scene based project with the last hard surface modeling project. For the last project i did a katana so I thought it would be good idea to either do a japanese temple/ shrine site or a japanese tatami room to fit the theme.

Feedback

Week 12: We can use orthographic view in camera for the final export. Sir liked the overall layout but did asked me to add a spotlight and 2 more light in the wall lamp to heighten the aesthetic.

Reflection

I did a few research on how to to model different parts of the tetami room so that I had a better idea on how the elements would look like closed up. Overall the modeling phase was quite smooth sailing and I find the bevel modifier to be extremely helpful in replacing the harsh line of a low poly model to a high poly model. I learned quite a few new things to model that's out of my comfort zone like the lamp and expecially the bamboo forest outside the window. Modelling the bamboos was a new experience for me and I found it fun to see how to slowly contructed and comes into shape. I actually avoided the texturing and rendering for a few days before I started because i remember the hassle I have been through using substance painter in the first project. It's not easy to navigate around when sir hasn't thought us how to use substance painter so I had to search up a tutrorial for it. But later on, my classmate actually taught me how to add texture with the shader editor and images which I had missed that lecture hence i needed reminder on how to do it. Once i've been reminded, the rest of the texturing process was smooth and I also took in the feedback the lecturer gave during the final rendering process. I encountered difficulties exporting the image and had to approach the lecturer for help and fortunately the issue was resloved within the given timeline.
