Task 2:
Design Proposition
Instructions
Task 2: Design Proposition
To further develop our design proposition, we will explore all aspects of
the design in greater depth. This includes conducting in-depth research on
technical feasibility, case studies, and benchmarking. Additionally, we
will refine our characters and environments, incorporating visual
references to enhance our concepts. Ultimately, we will finalize our
design with fully developed concept art for our characters and
environments, along with thumbnail sketches.
Before we started
anything, our group sat together and came up with our project management
document to keep track our tasks' progression and to delegate the work
evenly ina google spreadsheet.

Layout design
After gathering and analyzing the data, we finalized the mood board and
proceeded to the sketching phase. Given my focus on environmental
research, I continued developing the environment design, applying the
insights and techniques acquired from my studies and research.

Final Task 2: Design Proposition
Feedback
- Can write dialogue on the thumbnail
- Need to show the name (Chinese + romanisation / subtitle) on the lanterns - audience can relate
- Lantern - light slowly dim, and fall down \
- Being transported to the human world with other ghost...? - being thrown to his own grave
- Interact with people cleaning the grave
- Kid running passed, follows the kid
- Graveyard beside the park
- Getting hungrier, show his form fades away more
- Transition / show the spirit is fading? - opacity (need to be clear)
- Show a blink (scene becomes brighter then back to normal) when Yun remembers his uncle
- Show expressions of the kid when the tree grows
- Transformation - use motion blur, light on lantern
- Redraw the hair of the spirit like the human form
- Can render in 2D for the bg
- Work on the final concept art
- Show the graveyard with Xu Chen's empty grave
Reflection
Throughout Task 2, we deepened our design proposition by conducting thorough research, refining our concepts, and collaborating closely as a team. We started by organizing our workflow with a project management document to ensure tasks were evenly distributed and tracked effectively. Each team member focused on specific research areas, from technical feasibility and case studies to character design and environment layout studies, which we documented on our shared Miro board. I concentrated on environment layout and composition studies, applying professional techniques to develop our final designs. While refining sketches and mood boards, we encountered feedback that led to key improvements, such as localizing the neighborhood design and enhancing character silhouettes. We adjusted our work based on weekly critiques, focusing on details like Yun’s proportions, scene transitions, and graveyard elements. This iterative process, supported by storyboard delegation and technical research into tools like Blender, Krita, and Grease Pencil, helped us build a more cohesive and visually engaging project.I encountered some challenges in finding the right layout design for certain scenes, but with thorough research, careful comparisons, and some guidance from the lecturer, everything eventually came together successfully. Overall, this phase strengthened our design, enhanced our teamwork, and brought us closer to our final vision.
