PROJECT 1 - TECHNICAL AND MOTION GRAPHICS SENSIBILITIES

Details

Part 1: Precomp

I started constructing shapes for heirarchy with just squares and rectangles to build a pyramid which is often use to indicate a heirarchy system.

For the animation part i decided to have the blocks falling down from the smallest to the biggest block stacking on top of each other to prove the heirarchy system.

For balance, I have an idea to recreate the Yin & Yang symbol that symbolises peace, balance and harmony. I recreated the shape using the pen tool then place a dot in between.

Animating this, I wanted it to slowly rotate into with the percpective theory. From the closest to the viewer to slowly furthuring into the original placement while rotating.

I had an idea to create a square and cut some parts of it to imitate an arrow poiting towards a certain direction which in this case it's a diagonal line.

While animating, I just reduce the timeline of each vector to create an animation of them appearing subsequently, both from top to bottom and from bottom to top to indicate the direction it's pointing towards.

Before moving on to another composition, I switch to the overall composition view to to preview what I have animated thus far to judge whether the animation and vector style is coherent to eachother.

For symmetry, I got the vector inspiration from the example shown by sir which I'm trying to recreate one big rhombus and divide them into 4, each mirroring each other. To anmate each diamond slowly appearing, i had to search up a tutorial video about masking in after effects which eventually worked in my favour.

For focus, I got an idea to create like a target whether people would focus on when they are aiming for a bullseye which shooting. I overlap the circle strokes to create the vector composition above.

To animate, I hade them scaling down from big to small consecutively until they reach the middle point which is the main focus.

Going into animating scaling, I inserted a few circles with the eclipse tool and arrange them into a ring only enlarging the 4 point of the circle to increase the visual appeal of this composition.

Of course for this animation, I had to use the scaling feature to fully convey the purpose of this simple composition.

I got the insporation of a sound wave to contruct the composition of rhythm. I contructed the pole shape by combining 2 circles on each end of a rectangle.

Using the position animation and scaling, im able to achieve a result mimicing the movement of a actual sound wave.

Animating direction was pretty straight forward as I just contruct the shapes with the pen tool and position the arrows towards one direction leaving a trail behind completing the animation.

Part 2: Composition Remix

I placed the movement animation diagonally align to the would be moving in the same direction which indicates clear movement.

From the previous composition then transition into a scaling in balance.

Direction wise, I just had to ensure them are facing the same ways and the fade in and fade out transition was smooth.

Lastly fot rhythm, I just had it scale in as a transition from the last animation. Then had an idea of flipping part of the animation to promote the movement following the rhythm.

Feedback

Week 4: The animation is nice, keep up the goodwork. I could using the scaling tool for some of the animation to promote movement.

Week 5: Good practice, just change the colour of some element and add music.

Reflection

While I've had previous experience with After Effects, it still often causes me stress when I work with it. This particular assignment required me to build my composition directly in After Effects, which was new to me because I usually import my working files from Photoshop or Illustrator for animation. Learning from the tutorial videos provided by the lecturer was challenging, so I relied heavily on online searches to understand how to construct shapes and execute simple transformations. However, once I became comfortable with the basics, the project became more engaging as I delved into the endless possibilities of manipulating simple vectors and utilizing default animation styles like scale, rotation, opacity, and anchor points in After Effects. Through this project, I was able to further enhance my foundational skills in After Effects.
