DESIGN EXERCISES

From week 1-3, I watched all lecture videos of:
Gestalt theory
Contrast
Emphasis

Adhering to the brief,  I have selected 2 design principles. The design principles that I have selected are Emphasis and Harmony & Unity. Below are the individual post for each design.

1. Principle One: Emphasis

Emphasis is used to create dominance and focus in design work. There are various elements can be used to create emphasis such as colour, shapes or value to create dominance. Emphasis is a strategy that catches the viewer's attention to a specific design element. We see emphasis in most fields of design, including architecture, landscape design, etc.

My Design Process:

1.1 Visual References:

1.1.1 Image reference from Pinterest

This image that I have adhered shows an excellent example of the use of the design principle Emphasis. This is because the umbrellas the placement of the emphasized element is right in the middle which is easier for the viewer to spot. Moreover, the colours of the emphasized element is a lot more vibrant than the umbrellas surrounding it which draws the viewers' attention.

1.1.2 Image from Pinterest

This image accentuates middle ducking which stands out because of its colour difference from the rest of the ducklings but also the placement as well which is visible to the viewers' eyes. This one differs from the first picture because the vibrant colour surrounds the white duckling.

1.1.3 Image from Pinterest

The above image shows the colour difference in the same element. One part of the picture is coloured compare to the rest of the painting which is monotone. The coloured part of the painting is highly emphasized.

1.2 Idea Exploration

Below are my sketches for while applying the emphasis design principle.

                                                                       1.2.1 First sketch

My idea in mind was to draw he clouds in the sky as similar shapes and sizes to show the similarity before emphasizing the element I want with different colours.

1.2.2 Progress 1: Background colouring

I started out with choosing a few background colours which I think that would go coherent with the clouds yet still causes the clouds to stand out on their own.

       1.2.3 Progress 2: Background Blending

Then I start blending out the colours to create a more softer looking background instead of it being a solid colour.

1.2.4 Adding Elements

After that, i add in the elements like the dark clouds that goes coherent with the background because they are analogous colours with each other.

 1.2.5 Adding emphasis element

Then including the emphasis element, the white cloud which is bigger in size and its colour will make it stand out among the rest of the dark clouds.

1.2.6 Including details

Lastly, making some minor changes and append some details like the stars and tiny scattered clouds to round up the whole artwork together.

1.3 Final Outcome

1.3.1  Emphasis: Final artwork

This art is called "Dark clouds". I named it this way because the majority in the art are the dark clouds and the sky. However, one clouds still stands out among the rest. While creating this artwork, I was carrying the thoughts of pretty or petty influence. In this day and age, the society are becoming very judgemental and discriminating which causes people with a lot of pressures. To add on there are also peer pressure. With the access of advanced technology, people can judge other people through the media easily while staying anonymous hence cause a lot of harm to the victims. The victims can be anyone of us and people will be influenced to other influencers to match of to their beauty standards and expectations. Through my art, I'm trying to convey is that, we don't always have to change ourselves in order to fit in, even with the pretty temptations represented by the stars, sometimes standing out means being ourselves. This way, we shine brighter than any other stars.

2. Principle Two: Harmony & Unity

Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait. Harmony becomes monotony without variety. Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. They may fit the same theme or mood. Unity however, refers to the repetition of particular elements. They are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme. Unity and harmony may sound similar, but each play distinct roles in the way we experience design. Analogous colours play a significant role in the principle of design, harmony and unity.

My Design Process:

2.1 Visual References

 2.1.1 Image from Pinterest

This artwork plays with analogous colours like purple, pink, red, peach etc. The scale in the middle which draws in viewers' attention add on by it's colour which is a soft yellow. Even though there are many colours however it was created in harmony because of the centre piece which pulled the whole artwork together.

 2.1.2 Image from Pinterest

The image above portraits the design principle harmony and unity become of the semi circle scale with different image that portraits different scenarios. The colours used also ties the elements used together to create a peaceful looking art work at the same time have a focal point the middle which accentuates the Harmony in the artwork.

2.1.3 Image from Pinterest

The image above put the analogous colours into use with a few repetitive colours and strokes in the painting. The tree into middle is the focal point of this painting blends in to the rest of the background because of the technique and colours used.

2.2 Idea Exploration

Below are my sketches while applying to the second design principle that I have chosen.

2.2.1 First sketch

With a "Hope" in mind, I got inspired by the colours from the references I found but also wanted to do a scenery like artwork so I went ahead and sketched out what hope looks like in my mind while applying the scale ratio which compliments harmony and unity.

2.2.2 Colouring background

After doing my rough sketch, I proceed to choose the colour that I was inspired by from the references shown above. So, I went ahead and pick some different shades of purple and pink as the base colour for the whole artwork which I then colour in the background.

2.2.3 Painting details

Proceeding from the last process, I then went in and colour in all the hot air balloons and also adding the refined lines so that it takes its form and shapes to make it look like an hot air balloon.

2.2.4 Adding lights

After some consideration, I decided to add in some fire that would strongly signified that they are hot air balloons in the sky, this element also add on a focal point to the painting which will then round up the whole painting together.

2.2.5 Lavenders

I then also decided to add in some lavenders on the purple landscape that I initially had to attain a sense of harmony while letting the main character stand out in the middle of the scale.

2.2.6 Painting girl and landscape

Moving on, I painted in and give it details to the main character in this painting which is the little girl that will bring significant meaning to the artwork.

2.3 Final Outcome

2.3.1 Final Artwork: Hope

While creating this artwork, I had this vision in mind and I wanted to named it "Hope". Of course I mention how did the name came about in my mind. I named this artwork as hope because of how you see this little girl staring into the sky or the scenery with a carefree and relaxed composure. However, the backstory of this little wasn't always pleasant. The main character was actually a grown up living life like any other grown ups, working to pay bills, to survive while trying to find happiness in between of all stress and pressure she was getting from the society even though she is successful and earing well, making her family proud.  One faithful day, she decided to take a break from her current life status as the perfect little girl that everyone looked up to and admired, she walked out into the woods and found this peaceful haven. She gazed up into the sky and wondered, will I ever be able to pursue what I always wanted to. In that moment, the sky lit up with several hot hair balloons floating up into the sky, she stared at it from a distance looking at the shapes and the bright light shining accompanied by the sky colour which brought a sense of harmony in herself. "Everything is gonna be alright". The breeze that followed after that thought was a reassurance, she continues to enjoy this beautiful moment that she is lucky enough to witness with a hope in her heart, to go after what she has always dreaming about to do. She smiled and closed her eyes, letting this sense harmony and unity with her heart while the wind embrace her figure.

2.4 Feedback from lecturer

Self-Reflection:

This week I have learnt a few things from the lecture video by our facilitator. I have learn the use of analogous colours and scale to create harmony and Unity. To set a theme and mood that creates harmony while including all the elements. I get to explore into the colours that is closely related to each other at the same time created a painting that is colourful and fun. In emphasis, I went through some trials and error choosing what should I draw to bring out emphasis in my painting. After deep thoughts and understanding about the principle, I was able to create an element that stands out bright on it's on in the painting. I  have also learnt to work a bit faster so that next time I could get more feedback from my lecturer to improve my artwork furthermore.
